What Co-Occurring Means
A co-occurring disorder, sometimes called dual diagnosis, means a man is dealing with a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. This is not the exception at Step One. It is closer to the rule. The depression and the drinking, the trauma and the pills, the anxiety and the benzos, these things grow into each other.
Treating one and ignoring the other does not work, because the untreated half pulls the treated half back down. The drinking restarts the depression, or the depression restarts the drinking, and the man cycles.
How Step One Treats It
Step One treats both conditions together, inside the same residential program, with one team coordinating care rather than handing a man off between providers who never talk to each other. Therapy addresses the mental health condition and the substance use as parts of the same picture, with medical oversight supporting both.
That integration is the entire point. A man does not get sent across town to have half of himself addressed. He gets treated as one person with one connected set of problems.
